How to Prepare for an Indoor Family Photoshoot in NEPA

Planning a family photoshoot is such an exciting way to capture beautiful memories with your loved ones. And if you’re choosing to have your session indoors, you’re in for a cozy, stress-free experience! Indoor sessions are perfect for capturing authentic moments in a comfortable and familiar setting, free from unpredictable weather. Whether you’re having your session at home or in a studio, a little preparation can go a long way in making your photoshoot a success.

As a family photographer in NEPA (and a mom myself!), I know that preparing for a session can feel overwhelming. But don’t worry—I’ve got some awesome tips to help you! Here’s a guide on how to get your home, outfits, and family ready for your indoor family photoshoot.

Best Locations for an Indoor Family Photoshoot in Your Home

The best photos are taken in rooms where there is the most natural light. When I arrive in your home, I will look around and help. you decide the best locations. I open all the blinds and curtains to allow light into the home and we usually stay close by a window. Here are common places I love to take photos in within your home.

The Nursery or Playroom: It’s perfect for capturing candid, playful moments and beautiful details of the room.

The Living Room: A cozy couch, a soft rug, or a warm fireplace can create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

The Bedroom: A large bed makes for adorable snuggly family photos, especially with little ones.

Outside: Great place if you love to play in the backyard with your kids, play with chalk on the side walks, ride bikes together. These activities make a beautiful story telling, candid and heartfelt photoshoot.

Also if you are moving out or moving into a new place, it can be the perfect spot for a family photoshoot because of the large spaces.

How to Prepare Your Home for a Family Photoshoot

You do not have to deep clean the house for your in home photoshoot. All you really need to do is declutter and tidy up a little bit.

Clear unnecessary clutter from tables, shelves, and the background.

Use soft, neutral tones for blankets, pillows, and décor to create a timeless look.

Incorporate personal touches like a favorite family book, a cozy throw blanket, or a sentimental item.

A warm, lived-in space tells a story—your story—so don’t worry about making everything magazine-perfect! Do not worry if your house does not look like Pinterest, all we need is your family and window light!

What to Wear for an Indoor Family Photoshoot | Outfit Tips

I always suggest soft, neutral colors for all photos—you can never go wrong with neutrals! Coordinating outfits can make a huge difference in how your photos turn out. Here are some simple outfit tips:

I always start by choosing a color palette and then selecting outfits within those colors. You want to avoid super matchy outfits, large logos, and neon colors. To make it even easier, I made this Pinterest board with some examples: Pinterest Inspiration. After booking a session, I’ll also send you a style guide to help you plan!

Most importantly, choose clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable. If you’re unsure about what to wear, please let me know—I’m always happy to help!

How to Keep Kids Happy During a Family Photoshoot

Okay, mama—I know what you’re thinking. “What if my kids aren’t in the mood?” Trust me, I get it! Little ones have their own agendas, and sometimes, sitting still and smiling isn’t one of them. But don’t stress, I’ve got a few tricks to make sure your session is fun, relaxed, and full of genuine smiles!

Some things you can do prior to the session is to make sure they are fed and rested. We will try our best to plan the session during a time that they are the happiest. I avoid saying things like “say cheese” or bribes because I truly want them to have the best experience where they laugh and have fun. We’ll play games, have tickle fights, and create moments that make them genuinely laugh. If they want to run around and be silly, let them! Some of the most heartwarming photos come from those spontaneous little moments. Kids love to have a role and feel important too, so we will include them by letting them “help” or tell a joke.

Bottom line? If you’re having fun, your kids will too. And I promise, we’ll capture the magic—even if things don’t go exactly as planned!

A Stress-Free Family Photoshoot? Yes, It’s Possible!

Okay, let’s be real, family photos can feel chaotic, but that’s part of the magic! The best thing you can do is take a deep breath, relax, and just be in the moment with your family. No one expects perfectly posed, angelic kids (spoiler alert: those don’t exist!). The giggles, the snuggles, the tiny hands reaching for yours—those are the moments you’ll treasure most. Laugh, play, and interact naturally. I’ll guide you into the best lighting and settings, but the magic happens when you focus on just being with your family. As a mom and a photographer, I know how to capture your family’s love in a way that feels real and effortless. The goal is to make it feel less like a photoshoot and more like a fun, laid-back hangout where beautiful memories just happen to be captured. So, take a breath, soak in the moment, and get ready to love your family photos!
