Hello, I’m Renata, a family photographer based in Scranton PA, and the surrounding areas of NEPA. As a mom and a newborn photographer, I hear this question all the time: “Is my baby too old for newborn photos?” Maybe the first couple of weeks flew by in a blur, and you didn’t get the chance to schedule a session. Or maybe life just got busy (because let’s be real, newborn life is a whirlwind!). If that sounds like you, don’t stress—you can still capture beautiful, heartwarming photos of your baby.

What’s the Ideal Age for Lifestyle Newborn Photos?
Newborn lifestyle photos are more relaxed, they include the whole family and can be taken in the comfort of your cozy home. The best part? You can photograph newborns up to 3 months old. Babies grow and change so much after birth so I recommend taking them as sooner than later. However, life happens, sometimes moms need more time to recover and sometimes babies need time to settle in and that is okay!! We can take beautiful photos of your baby when you feel ready.
Here’s what you can expect based on your baby’s age:
At 2-6 weeks your baby might be more alert, but they’re still tiny and snuggly! We can capture gorgeous awake shots, sweet sleepy moments, and even some first little expressions.
At 6-12 Weeks babies have stronger eye contact and are starting to respond to their surroundings. This is a great time for connection-focused images, like cozy snuggles with mom and dad.
Do I Need to Buy Props For a Newborn Lifestyle Photoshoot?
I have a bag full of things that I love to bring to every session such as; stretchy newborn wraps, bows for baby girls, hats for baby boys, a neutral blanket, and toys to get siblings’ attention. I always bring a baby basket as well. My favorite props are the ones you have already in your home such as a nursery rug, the beautiful personalized blanket you have, and anything that is unique to your family.

How Long Does a Newborn Lifestyle Photoshoot Take?
A newborn lifestyle session typically lasts between 1.5 to 2 hours. Unlike posed newborn photography, which can take longer due to detailed setups, lifestyle sessions are more relaxed and flow naturally. We take plenty of breaks for feeding, soothing, and diaper changes, ensuring both baby and parents stay comfortable. The beauty of these sessions is that they are baby-led, meaning we follow your little one’s cues and capture moments as they unfold. There’s no rush—just a cozy, laid-back experience filled with love and connection.

Tips for a Successful Lifestyle Newborn Photoshoot
To make your session smooth and enjoyable, keep baby comfortable with a full belly and a cozy swaddle, as this helps them stay relaxed. Embrace awake shots—older babies are more alert, which means we can capture their bright eyes and first little expressions. Go with the flow and trust that candid, natural moments often turn out to be the most treasured photos. The key is to keep things stress-free and enjoy the snuggles and connection with your new baby.

Do I Need to Clean My House Before a Newborn Lifestyle Photoshoot?
One of the biggest concerns parents have before an in-home session is whether their house needs to be spotless. The short answer? Absolutely not. Your home doesn’t need to look perfect—it just needs to feel like your home. I typically focus on a few key areas, like the nursery, master bedroom, or living room, where natural light is best. A quick tidy-up (think clearing clutter from nightstands or couches) is all that’s needed. Don’t stress over every little detail—blankets, baby items, and even a little “real life” in the background make your photos feel more authentic. Your home is where your love story unfolds, and that’s what we’re here to capture!

What If I Want to Do My Lifestyle Newborn Photoshoot Somewhere Other Than My House?
Not everyone wants to have their newborn session at home, and that’s completely okay! If you’d prefer a different setting, we can explore other options that fit your vision. Renting a cozy studio space with great natural light is a great alternative, offering a clean and minimal backdrop without the need to prep your home. If the weather allows, an outdoor newborn session can also be magical—think soft blankets in a shaded park, cuddles in a field, or a quiet morning on your front porch. Some families even opt for a special location that holds meaning, like a grandparent’s home or a favorite vacation spot. No matter the setting, the goal remains the same—to capture the love and connection between you and your baby in a beautiful, relaxed way.
